- Boing Boing – my new favorite weird news site (sorry, Other Crap). I don’t know where these guys find these things, but they find them, and they find a lot of them, because they update their site multiple times in a day, according to my Bloglines subscription. I found a lovely little item today for all the fast food junkies out there. If you are having a hard time kicking the habit of getting fast food, then look at this web page ; it may help. It shows the advertisement of a certain menu item looking perfectly delicious……right next to a photo of what it really looks like. bleh.
- Architecture. What? Can a kitchen make you fat? I read an interesting article from the Washington Post archives this week that had me thinking. The author was questioning the practice of designing kitchens with super large pantries and large center islands, along with the trend toward open floor plans that integrate kitchens and family rooms. He was making a loose connection between the growing size of kitchens and the growing size of, well, us. I am still thinking on this one. On the one hand, I do think that if you hang out where the food is, sure, you are going to eat it. If the center island is loaded up with food, it’s very easy to graze on it all afternoon. If the food put out is junk, then, yes, junk will be consumed.
However, I like the practice of home cooking and eating together as a family. The promise of food can lure in those recalcitrant children and force them to spend some time with you, and it also gives you an opportunity to wave some healthy food in front of them. They will probably eat some of it. Just because the kitchen is big doesn’t mean it comes pre-stocked with Lay’s potato chips. There is plenty of room for individual choice in this scenario. I’m just sayin’.
If you want to read the article, and you have Microsoft Word, you can do so here. If you have, or do not mind getting, a Washington Post log-in, you can read it here.
If interested in hearing the interview that intrigued me, you can go to The Splendid Table and listen to the show. Find the April 14 broadcast, and you can listen online or download it to an MP3 – whatever floats your boat.
